Theory of Style

The Liberation of the Alphabet - Theorie des Style is a book originally published on the occasion of the exhibition A Tribute to Style, organized near Munich in 1996. Thirteen years after graffiti writing had traveled from New York to the rest of the world, Munich had become one of the metropolises of stylewriting. CHEECH H and TECHNO169 (STONE), both first-generation writers, had already been exchanging letters and reflections on style for years. Together with SCUM (CEMNOZ), they published the first in-depth analysis of letter forms, stylewriting, and its origins.

Today, stylewriting is still an important genre within graffiti, practiced by thousands of writers all over the world. Although techniques have developed further, the design of the 26 letters of the alphabet according to the New York tradition remains the basis for most writers' pieces even today. The analytical content of the book has lost none of its importance, making it absolutely sensible to reissue it about 30 years later.

The original 1990s layout by SMAL (Mirko Borsche), as well as the contents, has been left almost completely intact, with the exception of a few minor corrections. This classic, which has been out of print for many years, is therefore being republished in a high-quality hardcover edition, enriched by an additional retrospective insert written by TECHNO169 (STONE).
