Obey

Obey Clothing is a brand based on the artistic work, design, and ideals of Shepard Fairey. What started for Fairey with a simple sticker created in 1989 while he was studying at the Rhode Island School of Design, later evolved into a global Street Art campaign, as well as acclaimed artwork. The meaning of OBEY is rooted in the DIY counterculture of Punk Rock and Skateboarding, but it also drew inspiration from popular culture, commercial marketing, and political messaging. Obey Clothing was founded in 2001 as an extension of Shepard's work. In line with his ideas, clothing became another canvas for spreading his art and message to the people. OBEY clothing is heavily inspired by classic military design, workwear, and the cultural elements on which Shepard built his artistic career. Fairey sarcastically urges viewers, using the imperative "Obey," to pay attention to propagandists who want to bend the world to their agendas.
