Letterings (2015-2025)

Schriftzüge (trains with inscriptions) by Berlin-based photographer Emmett Edelstein is a photobook dedicated to the painted S-Bahn trains of the German capital. It is the sequel to his 2015 classic Farbzüge (colored trains). Each double-page spread features a single photograph, focusing all attention on the shot. This choice allows one to perfectly follow the scenes captured in the images, which show trains speeding through the city, changing backgrounds every second. All photographs were taken between 2015 and 2025 and mainly depict trains captured while traveling between stations. Combining the right location, moment, light, timing, and piece made the collection of these shots a long and demanding process for the photographer, spanning an entire decade.

In Schriftzüge, Emmett Edelstein has collected numerous trains painted by writers he has admired and followed for years. The book's 228 pages feature high-level recent work by PEPS, the return of KRIPOE to the trains, abstract works by the DIAMONDS crew, and timeless burners by BUZZ, MAD79, and the ubiquitous ROGER. In an era dominated by the daily overload of trainspotting on social media, this book offers a refreshing alternative for appreciating a curated selection of train works, printed in a large format and gathered within a clean, minimalist layout.
