Tales From Belgium (Bordeaux Cover)

Tales from Belgium

With Tales from Belgium, Alias Press has conducted an in-depth, unprecedented 6-year research project on the origins of graffiti writing on passenger trains in its home country, Belgium. Thanks to its geographical location, Belgium has become an essential stop for any self-respecting train writer. After a few years in which foreign writers from neighboring countries like France, the Netherlands, and Germany painted on the dark green and burgundy red carriages, the local scene began to take shape, eventually giving rise to some of the most well-known and respected train writers in Europe.

Tales from Belgium collects 160 extraordinary stories and 80 anecdotes, told over the span of 32 years by local and foreign writers, as well as railway police officers, cleaning staff, and train conductors. Alongside the testimonies, the publication presents some of the most significant newspaper articles dedicated to the subject throughout history. The volume offers a chronological overview starting in 1990, when some Dutch writers created the first graffiti on a Belgian passenger train, and extending to 2021, the year marking the end of the era of the iconic burgundy red trains. The book also features 1,500 never-before-seen, unpublished photographs, selected from the shots of 550 writers from Belgium and across Europe.

Designed by Studio Aurèle Sack, the book is available in three different editions. The contents are identical, while the covers vary, each representing one of the three decades chronicled in the volume. Each copy features a Pantone® shade inspired by the colors of the trains from their respective eras: dark green for the 90s, burgundy red for the 2000s, and light gray for the period from 2010 to the print date.
