A City Becomes Colourful – FLASHBACK

Ten years ago, in May 2016, four friends from Hamburg, activists in the world of graffiti and hip hop, came together to create a project that would not only bring to light the best book on the origins of graffiti in a city but would also generate an unexpected positive effect. FLASHBACK – Die Chronik 2016–2026 tells the interesting story of the volume EINE STADT WIRD BUNT and how it celebrated the local scene in a series of subsequent events.

In three main chapters, FLASHBACK meticulously traces the underlying idea, starting from a successful crowdfunding campaign, moving through subsequent exhibitions, the creation of an app, up to the organization of the TAG Conference and the UNLOCK Book Fair in 2023, a series of podcasts, and the final Jam in December 2025.

The impact that the book and the extraordinary biennial exhibition at the Hamburg Museum of History had is recounted in 320 pages with over 650 photos, including unreleased gems from the 80s. Interviews with the editors and supporters offer insight into the creation process, as well as the importance that only a printed publication can have when properly curated by industry experts.
