La questione non è chi è 1UP, ma piuttosto cosa è 1UP.
Tanto per cominciare, si scrive ‘1UP’ e vuol dire ‘One United Power’.
E per raccontare questo fenomeno che nasce dalla scena Berlinese degli anni ’90, poche righe non bastano. Perché si dovrebbe raccontare la storia del writing, dei Bloods e dei Crips. Bisognerebbe spiegare che cos’è una Tag e cosa significa appartenere a una Crew. Si dovrebbe conoscere il fenomeno del trainwriting e farsi spiegare da gente come Seen che cosa vuol dire scrivere il tuo nome dove tutti possono vederlo.

Ma bisognerebbe anche addentrarsi nella cultura underground di una Berlino divisa dal muro e, in particolare, di un quartiere, Kreuzberg, che dalla polvere di quel muro ha visto nascere alcune delle Crew di Writers più famose e attive al mondo. Su quel muro infatti, generazioni di giovani berlinesi hanno imparato a scrivere e disegnare (letteralmente) sopra i limiti imposti dall’autorità. Si sono addestrati a muoversi in silenzio, tra il lecito e l’illecito, tra l’arte e la politica. E quando il muro è stato abbattuto, i limiti da superare sono diventati altri. La fama personale, musa dei writers di tutto il mondo, qui ha avuto vita breve. Più la Crew è diventata famosa, più il singolo è diventato anonimo. E alla fine, una trentina di anonimi ragazzi della working class Berlinese, sono diventati 1UP, la Crew più conosciuta la mondo.

Dall’orizzontale, al verticale, 1Up è cresciuta in tutti i sensi. Dal 2003 a oggi, i palazzi di tutto il mondo (United vuol dire global per questi ragazzi) sono stati conquistati da queste tre semplici lettere. Perché quando per fare un pezzo devi introdurti in una proprietà privata, scassinare una decina tra porte e lucchetti, disattivare telecamere e sistemi di sicurezza e avere esperienza di scalata in corda doppia, hai bisogno di qualcosa di dannatamente semplice da scrivere prima che arrivino le guardie. La semplicità è anche un forte strumento di condivisione. La trasfigurazione della lettera che assicurava l’anonimato, lascia il posto a una scrittura massiccia dai contorni neri e sempre chiaramente definiti. La lettera non solo torna ad essere comprensibile, ma diventa impossibile non leggerla.

Ma la condivisione è anche quella che avviene online. L’uso di almeno 3 punti macchina per le riprese, ai quali si aggiunge un drone per il controllo della posizione delle forze dell’ordine, assicura una copertura quasi hollywoodiana ad ogni azione della Crew. Grazie al controllo mediatico delle loro azioni i ragazzi di 1UP si sono dati un nuovo obiettivo. Lo scopo non è più stupire o intrattenere lo spettatore attraverso immagini e lettere ricercate, ma coinvolgerlo nella stessa creazione del pezzo. Quando leggi 1UP in cima ad un palazzo, non puoi fare altro che cominciare a chiederti come diavolo hanno fatto ad arrivare a scrivere in un punto che sembra impossibile da raggiungere. Il messaggio, più che la scritta in sé, è l’azione che ne permette la realizzazione. Il significato è esattamente quello che si ha di fronte. One United Power non è solo una Crew (o una famiglia, come amano ripetere) ma un invito ad alzare lo sguardo e a guardare oltre il muro, proprio dove non ti aspetteresti mai di trovare qualcosa.

It would be necessary to explain what a Tag is and what it means to belong to a Crew. You should know the phenomenon of trainwriting and have people like Seen explain to you what it means to write your name where everyone can see it.

But we should also go deep into the underground culture of a Berlin divided by the Wall and, in particular, the story of a neighborhood, Kreuzberg, which from the dust of that Wall saw the birth of some of the most famous and active Writers Crews in the world. On that Wall in fact, generations of young Berliners have learned to write and draw (literally) above the limits imposed by authority. They trained themselves to move in silence, between the lawful and the illicit, between art and politics. Finally, when the Wall was torn down, the limits to be overcome became others. The personal fame, a Muse for the writers around the world, has had a short life here. The more famous the Crew became, the more the single became anonymous. In the end, thirty anonymous Berliner working class kids have become 1UP, the most well-known Crew in the world.

From horizontally to the vertically, 1Up has grown in every sense. From 2003 to today, these three simple letters have conquered buildings from all over the world (‘United’ means Global for these kids). The reason is simple. If, in order to make a piece, you have to enter a private property, break in a dozen between doors and padlocks, turn off cameras and security systems and have a rappel experience, then you need something damn easy to write before the guards arrive. Simplicity is also a strong sharing tool. The transfiguration of the letter, which used to assure anonymity, become a massive writing, with black outlines that always clearly define it. The letter not only returns to be understandable, but it becomes impossible not to read it.

Sharing is also online. The use of at least 3 camera points for shooting and a drone to control the position of the police, ensures an Hollywood-style coverage for every action of the Crew. Thanks to the media control of their actions, the people at 1UP set themselves a new goal. The aim is no longer to amaze or entertain the viewer through sought-after images and letters, but to involve them in the creation of the piece itself. When you read 1UP on top of a building, all you have to do is start asking yourself ‘how the hell did they get to write in a place like that?’. The message, rather than the writing itself, is the action that allows its realization. The meaning is exactly what is in front of you. One United Power is not just a Crew (or a family, as they like to repeat) but an invitation to look up and look over the wall, right where you would never expect to find anything else.
